The implementation of very high speed serial interconnections between computer system chips (i.e., chips executing an operating system) is subject to a variety of possible failure modes. Chip failures can involve intermittent faults in the electrical paths that carry data from chip to chip or chip to the outside world. Typically, these intermittent faults cause data errors. However, these intermittent faults can also cause temporary loss of the transmission of a data frame, so that the data frame is actually not received by the intended receiver. The frame loss itself is generally not harmful, but in some circumstances it is. In particular, if a data frame is lost, a receiver might not be able to determine the last data frame transmitted in the serial link and, thus, might conclude that no frames have been sent by the transmitter. In this case, the receiver does not respond to any new data frames that it receives. Accordingly, the loss of one data frame will prevent the receiver from responding to the next data frame. The loss of a data frame is much more serious if the data frame contains both a packet header and a packet payload. Loss of the packet header prevents the receiver from knowing the address of the intended destination of the packet. A system in which the receiver incorrectly concludes that no packet has been received is not well suited to receive packets that it does not know are being sent to it. For example, a system in which the receiver does not respond to packet headers will not be able to know whether the data frames that it receives actually were sent by the transmitter. The packet headers might be received and processed, but without knowing that they were sent by the intended transmitter, the receiver will not know how to respond to the payload data in the frames. There is therefore a need for a serial link that can withstand more transient faults than conventional links.Q: Remove item from SQL database I'm trying to delete an item from a database.
